Layer size and Strength

Do layer line sizes affect the tensile strength of a print on the Makerbots using tough PLA?

We have done testing on whether resolution (essentially layer size) affects tensile strength and in general it did not. MIDN Roser also did extensive comparison of tough vs non-tough version of PLA and the results vary.

The bottom lines as we have seen them so far are:

- Tough versions are usually a little stronger and more ductile than non-tough version

- Resolution has minimal effect, but remember infill does have a large affect. During MIDN Rosers's work, he used 100% infill samples.

  • We are fully up and running - at least on the web. The MakerSpace itself will be moving to the 2nd Deck of Rickover Hall by the end of July in preparation for AY2020, but this website is fully complete and all future aspects of the MakerSpace are already on this website. Not sure where to start? Start by first creating an account on this website and then view some of our Overview videos here . If you are an outside of USNA visitor, please feel free to also create an account and look around. We have spent the Summer of 2019 working on this capability so hopefully you will find it helpful and interesting. Lastly, please feel free to send us any comments at admin@makerspaceusna.com. As always, Happy Printing!
